Confidence Cheats Your Brain Falls For (And Why They Actually Work)

5 mindset tricks that feel small but shift everything. Backed by neuroscience, NLP, and real coaching wins.

You don’t need a 5-year plan or a 10-step morning routine to feel more confident today.

What you need is something simple, science-backed, and doable. A little brain cheat. A subtle shift. One that helps you interrupt overthinking, bypass the inner critic, and get back into action, even when your head says, “Nope, not today.”

As a creative confidence coach, I help women reconnect with themselves so they can start showing up, and actually do the thing, whether that’s launching a business, speaking up online, or finally taking the next brave step.

So today I want to give you five powerful mindset hacks that I use in my own work and with my clients inside The Visibility Studio and The Enoughness Evolution. These are real tips that are rooted in psychology, NLP, and coaching techniques that rewire how you think, feel, and show up.

If you're someone who keeps saying "I'll start when I feel ready," this post is your invitation to cheat the system, in the best way.

1. The Body Compass Confidence Check

Where confidence really lives (and how to access it fast).

When you're stuck in your head, you forget that your body already knows. This practice helps you tune in and tap into clarity without second-guessing yourself to death.

Try this:

  • Hand on your head: "What do you think I should do?"
  • Hand on your heart: "What do you want?"
  • Hand on your belly: "What do you know to be true?"

This simple somatic NLP-style scan is a key part of The Reignite Kit because it brings you back to your inner yes. The version of you who already knows. You’ll be amazed how often the body gives you answers the brain was too noisy to hear.

Use it when: you're overthinking or battling perfection paralysis.

2. The Inner Critic Job Swap

Your inner critic isn’t the enemy, even thought I know sometimes it feels like it is, it’s actually a burnt-out protector.

Inspired by Tara Mohr’s work (and expanded in The Enoughness Evolution), this technique is about getting curious instead of combative.

In The Reignite Kit, we meet your inner critic with compassion. You literally name it, draw it, and write it a breakup letter (“Thank you, but I’m good now.”)

Beth's critic showed up as a prim, polished headteacher voice saying, "You'll look stupid if you show up online." When she personified it, named it “Mrs. Rulebook,” and thanked her for trying to protect her image, she felt freer to be real and visible, freer to share more parts of herself that previously she'd been conditioned to keep hidden

Try this: Next time your inner critic pipes up, pause. Ask, "What are you trying to protect me from?" Then gently let it know: "I’ve got this."

3. Visualise Like You Mean It

Your brain can't tell the difference between real and vividly imagined. Use that.

This is one of my favourite confidence shortcuts. Inside The Reignite Kit, you’ll meet your future self, the one who’s already confident, already showing up, already doing the thing.

When Amy tried this, she saw her future self as calm, magnetic, and walking into rooms without apology. Just visualising and tapping into her helped her feel less frozen by the fear of what others might think.

Try this: Before you hit publish, walk into a meeting, or pitch your idea, close your eyes and ask: "What would Future Me do right now?"

4. Create Before You Consume

Stop scrolling. Start expressing. Your confidence lives in the action you take.

So many of my clients (and yep, me too) fall into the trap of overconsuming and under-creating. You read, scroll, compare... and suddenly you’re paralysed.

Creativity isn't just about art. It’s about expression. Reclaiming your thoughts before the algorithm fills your brain with someone else's.

That’s why The Reignite Kit opens with creative expression exercises. Scribbles. Shapes. Emotions in colour. When you reconnect with that part of you, clarity follows.

Try this: During your first 5 minutes of your day, grab a pen and paper and ask yourself "What wants to come through me today?" Write or draw whatever comes up for you, don't overthink and just let it flow.

5. Track the Tiny Wins

Confidence is built in the breadcrumbs.

Confidence doesn’t come from waiting to feel ready. It comes from doing the thing, and then reminding your brain that you did.

Inside The Reignite Kit is a mini Confidence Tracker. It's so simple it almost feels silly. But it’s a neuroscience-backed way to rewire self-trust.

Robyn started tracking moments she spoke up, posted, or honoured a boundary. A week later, she told me: "I didn’t realise how much I was actually doing. My inner critic was just louder than the facts."

Try this: At the end of each day, write down one brave thing you did. Then rate your confidence out of 5.

These five hacks gave you a glimpse into how powerful your mind-body connection really is, and how quickly your inner narrative can shift with the right support.
