We’ve all been asked, “What did you dream of becoming when you were younger?” But what if this no longer resonates? Let's face it, you're a different person to who you were when you were a child.
You see, life changes. Priorities shift. And instead of chasing a dream from years ago, maybe what really matters is focusing on what you value today.
Discovering what you truly value
It’s easy to feel stuck when you’re always thinking about what you should have achieved by now, mixed in with that annoying internal voice telling you "you are too old". But I’ve found that real clarity and fulfillment come from understanding what brings you purpose right now, in this moment.
Think about this:
- What kind of life do you want to create for yourself and your family today?
- What brings you a sense of confidence and satisfaction?
- What lights you up and makes you feel empowered and aligned?
By focusing on your core values, you can make decisions with more clarity, courage, and intention. For me, the moment I stopped chasing external goals and took the time to understand my true values, everything shifted. I found more confidence in the choices I was making, and life felt more in sync with who I really am. This could help you find some direction and meaning in your life too...
Here's a starting point for you:
I want to share a quick exercise with you that’s been a game-changer for me. It’s designed to help you figure out what you really value in life, so you can start living with more purpose and confidence.
- Take a moment to reflect: Grab a notebook and jot down recent moments when you felt truly happy and fulfilled. Think about what was happening in those moments.
- Spot the patterns: Look for common themes in those experiences—was it connection with loved ones? A sense of achievement? Helping others? These are clues to your core values.
- Pick 3-5 key values: Once you’ve identified the themes, choose the values that stand out to you the most. It could be anything from self-worth, creativity, or balance, to courage or personal growth. Trust your gut.
- Check-in: Now, ask yourself—how well do your current choices align with these values? Are they showing up in your daily life, or are there areas where you feel disconnected from them?
Why they matter
When you know your values, you build a foundation of belief in yourself and your choices. It helps you set boundaries, create goals that align with your purpose, and find a sense of fulfillment that doesn’t depend on external validation.
Values guide you through tough decisions, give you the resilience to bounce back from setbacks, and help you live with clarity and purpose. And when you align your life with your values, you’ll feel more empowered to be the best version of yourself.
